DAy of the dead
The day of the dead, celebrated across Mexico is a day to celebrate those who are not with us anymore. Rather than being sad and grieving, people make altars that celebrate the lives of the people who are chosen. It is on November 2nd of every year and people celebrate it by painting faces, making sugar skulls and altars. They also make bread and light candles as a beacon to other, forgotten souls.
For my day of the dead altar, I chose my old dog Loki. The items that I put on the altar were things that he liked. I put out a picture of him with the entire family and all of his favorite candles. I also put up a full written description that told about where he came from, what he liked and when he died. I also wrote about other things about him. Showing the altar to people felt good because it felt like I was honoring him by telling people his story and just getting to feel like other people knew him.
I learned a variety of Spanish words that I didn't know before as well as re living the days that I had my dog. That made me feel good, but I feel like I could have used more of my class time to work on it because I felt rushed at the end doing everything at home. Overall I feel like I had quality work and a good amount of it. I feel the best about the exhibition because it was fun to show my work to people.
