Imperialism on Trial
This project was about the book we read called Things Fall Apart. The basic premise was that we put on a fake trial, witnesses, judge, jury, everything. The trial was a wrongful death case, meaning someone died, and we had to either prove or disprove if it was a certain person, or group's fault. We separated into teams, the first class as the defense and the second class as the plaintiff. We each had a role to play in the wrongful death case of Okonkwo, a strong Ibo man who killed himself supposedly because of the actions of british missionaries. My role in this big pile of confusing was to be a witness named Uchendu, who was Okonkwo's uncle. I had to write a testimony about what I did and what I allegedly saw. I got a lot better at public speaking and I say this because I am usually nervous about it, but in this case I felt perfectly comfortable.
The role I had in this project was to play the part of Uchendu, Okonkwo’s uncle that advises him about life. I had to pair up with one of the lawyers who was Andy and make a testimony for the court. We then had to come up with questions and answers as well as potential cross examination questions from the other side.
The skill that I strengthened most was my collaboration. While I was working with andy, rather than try to get out of it and work alone, I accepted what I had to do and thus, I am now able to work with a partner as well as in a group if I have to. I actually rather enjoyed it because I didn't have to do everything, so I was a lot less stressed over it. In the future, I will make a mental note in order to make sure I collaborate and advocate so that my projects get done to the best that they can be.
From this project I learned a lot about the legal system that our country uses. I learned about questioning and crossing, as well as what an wrongful death case is. I also spent time with my sister to learn about what a tort is as well as tort mongers. From this project, I now have more interests about what I can do with my life because now I know that the legal system is not all boring like I thought it was.
